2015 Letterpress Valentine's Day Cards

Heidi Shenk "cards" letterpress Valentine's Day

They're here! They're here! While I had hoped to have had these ready a little earlier, they have finally arrived in the shop. This year's Valentine's Day line is a full line of letterpress goodness-- my first full letterpress line! For those of you that don't know what they means, here's the quick version of it all. I drawn my designs, put them into the computer, get photopolymer plates made with my designs, and finally use those plates in a 100+ year old press to transfer the designs to the cards. The final product, is a beautiful card that has an embossed type quality to it. And I'm in love.

All five of the new Valentine's Day cards are printed this way, my left arm cranking a giant wheel to work the press. After working on the press all afternoon yesterday, I woke up this morning with sore muscles in my left arm that I didn't even knew existed! I use 100% cotton card stock (fancy schmancy!) for all of the letterpress cards and the outcome is drool worthy if you're a paper nerd like me.

Starting today, you can save 20% off in the shop if you use the code VDAY20. The code expires on Saturday, so you have the next two days to snag your cards at a discount. I hope you love the new cards just as much as I do!

Local Events

Heidi Shenk

True story: I was duking it out with Comcast and Verizon for 17 days because we had absolutely no internet. Trying to write blog posts with stolen wifi was pretty much impossible. I mean, photos would take waaaay too long to load. The happy ending is that I now have internet again as of Monday. So, I wanted to drop a quick line to say that I am alive. In addition, there are some fabulous upcoming craft shows that I'll be participating this weekend and later on this month here in Baltimore.

If you're in the Baltimore area and want to shop locally, these holiday markets are fantastic markets to check out. Not only will I be offering my ridiculously hilarious greeting cards, there will be tons of other amazing artists participating as well. Last year, I'm fairly certain that I completed most of my Christmas shopping for my family at Merry Mart.

If you make it out to any of these shows, don't be shy! Introduce yourself and say hi-- I love meeting people from this fantastic city that I call home! :)

Holiday Giveaway

Heidi Shenk giveaway

Holiday season is in full swing in my studio, but not so much in my house. I know some people have already started decorating their homes with Christmas decor, but that's just not me. While I'm always ahead of the season by default, as I have to plan my holiday line well in advance, I always feel behind in my every day life. Most likely, my tree will go up the week before Christmas and I'll attempt to hang the stockings and maybe some lights and a wreath outside here and there before the season has come and gone. So, for the sake of never quite having it together on that front, I might as well celebrate the arrival of the season with you all here.

I've teamed up with a few of my favorite bloggers and small business owners to give away some fabulous items that will surely spread holiday cheer. A big thanks to Paige from Little Nostalgia and The Room Kit for organizing this holiday happiness!

Gold Foil Christmas Cards

Heidi Shenk "cards" "shop"

Just as I'd promised when I introduced 3 new Christmas cards to you all last week, I had a couple more up my sleeve that were a bit sparkly! These last two designs are printed on 120lb felt mark card stock and then pressed with gold foil. And just because you can never have too much gold, I paired them with gold envelopes.

You know when you have a vision of what something will look like? Yup, these cards are just that. I'm so pleased with how they turned out! They feel luxurious, classic, and contemporary all wrapped up in one. You can purchase these cards as single cards, or there is also the option to purchase them at a discount for a set of ten if you'd like to stock up on these for the holidays.

Are you a fan of gold or metallics during the holiday season?

Spinach Pie

Heidi Shenk food & drink recipe

Spinach Pie

There are a lot of recipes from my childhood that I continue to make as an adult. One of them is this delicious spinach pie. This recipe, which happens to be one that my aunt contributed to the More With Less cookbook, has always been a favorite. Growing up, I would ask my mom for spinach pie and corn for my birthday meal sometimes. While there's that stigma that kids hate spinach, I certainly had no qualms with this recipe that is packed full of deliciousness.

In the colder fall months, our farm share still seems to have a plethora of spinach. We love spinach, so this recipe has been on repeat. And the best part is that there are always leftovers for lunch!

What you'll need:

  • 1 pie crust (I make my own, though I know some of you prefer not to)
  • 2 quarts fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup swiss cheese, grated

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet and saute the onion over medium heat. Add the chopped spinach and stir until wilted. Put the spinach and onions in a medium sized bowl, and mix in nutmeg, oregano, salt, eggs, and cheese. Spoon the mixture into an empty pie crust and press to fill out the crust. Bake in the oven uncovered for 35-40 minutes.

And as I requested as a child, I often serve the spinach pie with corn, but also will often add a salad to round out the meal. While fresh spinach makes this pie truly delicious, sometimes I use frozen spinach in a pinch, being sure to thaw and drain it first.

Do you still make recipes from your childhood? Are you a fan of spinach like me?
