Gary Clark, Jr.
Heidi Shenk
If you haven't heard of Gary Clark, Jr. yet, you've been missing out. I was first exposed to Gary Clark, Jr. when we went to the third Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2010. He's even more recently been making a name for himself and by all accounts has to be bringing back the blues for younger generations. Hailing from Austin, Texas, his guitar style is raw and crunchy and his voice is soulful. He offers something new and fresh for the music scene while still sticking to blues roots hints of the likes of even Jimi Hendrix or Robert Johnson. Think I'm talking this guy up too much? Decide for yourself after taking a listen. I'll leave you with two videos today which were my first glimpse of Gary Clark, Jr. at Crossroads.
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart
Heidi Shenk
Nope. Not talking about the Wilco version of I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. In fact, I'm going out on a limb here and saying that this cover of the song is by far better. The original just feels so dead to me. And, quite frankly, I'm kind of tired of the "Wilco is the coolest band ever and I'm so cool because I love Wilco b.s." Sorry if you're a Wilco fan. Not trying to put you down, but I think I warned everyone long ago that I'm a pretentious music snob.
Needless to say, JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound really put a great spin on this song. A spin that gets me dancing. The band out of Chicago has a lot of other really good songs as well, my favorite being Sister Ray Charles which you can listen to here if you have Spotify. I would have put that video on here. However, the only video I found of the song was a live version that also had an annoying drunk couple dancing. So I wanted to spare you all. Oh heck, I guess I could at least give you the link for the video since you're probably curious about the drunk couple now. But don't say I didn't warn you.
What have you been listening to lately that makes you dance? Let me know! I need some new dancing-in-the-kitchen-while-cooking music.

Little Talks
Heidi Shenk
I think I overestimated others on their scale of love for music based on the non-participation of my Tuesday Music Party (waaaaaaah wow). So instead of a linky party, I'll just post what I love and hope that you love it too. And if you want to share what you've been listening to, feel free to leave it in the comments-- because seriously people, I always want a few new things to slap on the record player, or stereo, or iPod (whatever you like to use the most... just fill in the blank).
As of late, I find myself wanting to listen to Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men over and over again. I wake up in the morning with it stuck in my head and feel the need to get it out of my system. So I play it once thinking that will do the trick. Instead, I want to hear it again.
And in case you were wondering, this Icelandic band has a lot of other really great songs too. What do you think? I think I may just have to walk my butt down to The Sound Garden on April 3 when their album, My Head is an Animal, comes out.

Somebody That I Used to Know
Heidi Shenk
I'm a sucker for good film. Combine artsy film with good music and I'm even happier. Here's one that I couldn't resist sharing with you-- Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye. It really just seems to bring the raw emotion of the song alive in such a simple way. It sucked me right in.
Music Exchange
Heidi Shenk
When my cousin is in town, the visit turns into a music exchange. For the holidays, she flew into Dulles to visit my aunt and uncle for about a week. And we were headed down to their house for Christmas and a fondue feast a few days later. So it was a given that music would be a subject thrown onto the table. Between my immediate family and theirs, this is always a topic that comes about. Both my cousin and I grew up with parents that placed music in the forefront-- music always on the stereo, actually listening to and talking about it rather than being something that is played in the background.
Before we headed down toward DC for our Christmas meal, my cousin requested I bring some music. I felt it fitting to grab the stack of albums that has been sitting on top of our stereo-- the albums that have gotten the most airtime over the last year. And thinking about these albums, it also seems fitting to share some of them with you.
As this year closes, a look back on some of our favorite albums that we've listened to this year (whether they be new or old releases).
The Black Keys - Brothers
Umphrey's McGee - Death by Stereo
Alison Krauss & Union Station - Paper Airplane
Tedeschi Trucks Band - Revelator
J Roddy Walston & the Business - J Roddy Walston & the Business
Foster the People - Torches
And a few worth noting that were also taken from the stack for the music exchange pre-photo op.
Grace Potter & the Nocturnals - Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
The Jayhawks - Mockingbird Time
Ra Ra Riot - The Orchard
Delta Spirit - History from Below
Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers - Levitate
The Bridge - National Bohemian
